BEATTY AND JELLICOE
Sir, —Your correspondents on this discussion give the impression that Admiral Beatty was promoted to the position held b.v Admiral Jellicoe at the time cf the 13attle of Jutland. Was this position that of First Sea Lord, or Of Admiral in command of the Grand Fleet? I understood that Jellicoe was First Sea Lord before the Battle of Jutland. One of your correspondents speaks of Admiral Beatty as having been promoted to supreme command after Admiral Jellicoe was recalled. I was under the impression that Admiral Wemyss was appointed to the position formerly held by Jellicoe. Frcm then until after the end of the War, Wemyss was in supreme command. He represented the British Navy at the Peace Conference. Beatty was not in supreme command until Wemyss' retirement — after the war ended. Starboard.
