FIFTY YEARS AGO

THE SEARCH FOR GOLD BAY OF PLENTY PROSPECTS There was considerable disappointment half a century ago when it was announced that an examination of specimens of quartz found in tho Bay of Plenty showed few signs of gold. An item in the New Zealand Hebald of February 18, 1886, stated: —

"Among the many examples of quartz and other stone, supposed to be goldbearing, found in the Te Puke and other Tauranga districts, and examined by Mr. Montgomery, only one was found to be of any value. Many of the samples contained neither gold nor silver. The fact that the creeks do not contain gold Mr. Montgomery regards as a bad indication for the district ever becoming a rich gold-bearing one."
