NEW MINISTER

UNITARIAN CHURCH ARRIVAL OF DR. MITCHELL The new minister of the Unitarian Church, Ponsonby Road, Dr. Cyprus R. Mitchell, formerly of Wellington, arrived in Auckland yesterday by the Monowai from Sydney, where he has been spending a holiday. Dr. Mitchell, who is an Australian, was educated in the United States, and has had a wide experience of Church and humanitarian work in America, Australia and Russia. As a young man Dr. Mitchell travelled widely in the timber and mining areas of Western Australia, and then went as a student to Eureka College, Illinois, United States. In 1911 he graduated B.A. and was ordained in the ministry. Further scholastic distinctions which he gained were M.A., University of Missouri, 1914; D.D., Yale University, 1923; and Ph.D., Yale University, 1931. In 1923-24 he conducted research work at Oxford University. In 1914-15 he was pastor at Bendigo, and from 1926 to 1928 held an associate ministry in Melbourne. In 1926 also he was religious and educational director of the Y.M.C.A. in Melbourne. Dr. Mitchell was sent to Russia by the International Committee of the Y.M.C.A. in 1917, to work among the Russian soldiers. He arrived in Moscow a week before the revolution started and remained in Russia until December. 1918.

The ceremony of inducting Dr. Mitchell to the charge of the Ponsonby Church will take place on the afternoon of March 1. He will be tendered a reception by members on March 4.
