TURF IN AUSTRALIA

VICTORY ♦ FOR CUDDLE G. PRICE'S GOOD DAY OAKLEIGH PLATE SURPRISE BELLE SILHOUETTE WINS (Received February 16, 8.6 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Feb. 16 The New Zealand mare Cuddle opened her winning account in Australia at the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's meeting at Caulfield yesterday, when she accounted for the St. George Stakes. She was ridden by K. Voitre and displayed a fine turn of speed. Voitre was also successful on Cotys in the Bond Handicap, in which he rode a vigorous and characteristic finish, to win by a head, to the obvious discomfiture of the bookmakers. Cuddle's stablemates Gold Rod and Ilium, trained bj- G. Price, won both divisions of the Federal Stakes. Gold Rod is proving a most profitable colt. He was purchased at the New Zealand National yearling sales last year by Mr. E. J. Watt for 2oogns. and has now recorded two wins and a third in three starts. Ilium is also regarded as a promising colt. The Oakleigh Plate furnished a regular surprise, Belle Silhouette snatching a half-head victory from Arachne, who was conceding 3olb. The result was in doubt until the last stride. Phocis fractured a fetlock in the Warden Hurdles and had to be destroyed. For the first time in Australia the American type of numbered saddle-cloth was used, the black numbers on a white background being greatly appreciated. ■" North Cape was unplaced in the first division of the Salisbury Handicap, wherein a smash occurred, K. Voitre being thrown. His mount, Curragh, was destroyed, but Voitre -was uninjured. A. Grant, rider of Whitford, who fell over Curragh, broke a leg. .Results: FEDERAL STAKES, Of £600; two-year-olds; 5 fur. First Division GOLD ROD (N.Z.-bred), E. J.
