ANNUAL PICNICS

AN OUTDOOII WEEK-END OVER 20 EXCURSIONS RESORTS NEAR AUCKLAND Auckland went a-picnicking during the week-end, fine weather both on Saturday and yesterday favouring over 20 organisations which held their annual picnics. The largest two were those of tho Otahuhu Railway Workshops, at Motuihi Island on Saturday; and the Labour Party, at Pine Island yesterday. Other favoured resorts were Waiheke, Tui Glen, Eastern Beach, Blockhouse Bay and Islington Bay. LABOUR'PARTY OUTING The annual Labour Parly picnic was held at Pine Island yesterday, and extra launches had to bo engaged as over 1500 people attended. Arrangements were in the hands of the social committee of the party, the chairman being Mr. M. G. Osborne, assisted by Mr. T. Martin. The ladies of the committee were Mesdames E. Prince, O. Curtice, T. Martin, K. Wynn, and S. Keats. The secretaries were Mr. and Mrs. l'\ E. Martin. The picnic was attended by Messrs. P. W. Schramm, W. T. Anderton and W. J. Lyon, M.P.'s, the deputy-mayor, Mr. Bernard Martin, Mr. J. 'l'. Jennings, president, and Mr. J. S. Stewart, vice-president of tho party, and Messrs. F. Lark, J. A. Mason and E. F. Andrews, members of tho Auckland City Council., An enjoyable day was spent. The children's races were popular, and all children under five received prizes. RAILWAY WORKSHOPS The stall of the Otahulm railway workshops and their families and friends, to a total number of about '2()00, held their annual picnic at Motuihi Island on Saturday. The ideal weather prevailing and the excellent organisation of the picnic committee made the outing most successful and enjoyable. Among the picnickers were (>SO children, who attended as the guests of the Workshops Social Committee, which utilised tho proceeds of dances during the winter to provide the youngsters with a free trip. Special trains from Papakura and Henderson, provided by the department for the free transport of tho staff, conveyed large numbers from the outer suburbs. On the island the children were given ice cream, cooling drinks and toys. They also participated in a comprehensive programme of over 20 races and games. The Onehunga Band was in attendance and played selections. A baby show was held during the afternoon and the winners were: —Under six months: Baby Joddonm, 1; Baby Spooner, 2. WATERSIDE WORKERS The Auckland Waterside Workers' Fellowship Club held its annual picnic at Eastern Beach yesterday, over 200 people attending. Various competitions were held and prizes were distributed among all young children. A silver afternoon tea set was presented to the secretary, Mr. A. Matthews, by the president, Mr. G. Beer, in recognition of Mr. Matthews' services. POST AND TELEGRAPH The annual picnic of the staff of the superintending engineer's branch. MOUNT ALBERT BAPTISTS An enjoyablo outing at Blockhouse Bay was spent by the Mount Albert Baptist Sunday School on Saturday. A lurge number of pupils and friends wore present. During the day, teams of boys, who are learning baseball, gave several exhibition games, which created a lot of interest.
