CONTESTS AT DUNEBIN DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS SUCCESSES OF AUCKLANDERS FRANKHAM AND MISS LEYDON [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIX. Sunday The New Zealand senior national swimming championships opened here yesterday and, although there were no sensational performances in the first scries of finals, tho swimming was of a high standard and in most cases the finishes were closo. At tho end of the first day's events Auckland, holder, is leading for the Yaldhurst Shield with 13 points, Otago being second with 12, while Canterbury and Wauganui each has five points and Southland one. Tho men's mile championship provided the only real surprise of tho meeting so tar, tho young Canterbury swimmer, Newell, beating th» favourite, O'Driscoll, of Otago, in a closo tussle. It. B. Frankham, Auckland, was successful in tho 100 yds and Miss M. Lcydon, Auckland, successfully defended her title for the ladies' 220 yds. Smith, Wanganui, had an easy win in the men's 220 yds breaststroke. Tho results were: — 100 Yds Men's Championship.—First heat: P. Pennington (Wellington), 1; W. J. Jarvis (Otago), 2; R. B. Frankham (Auckland), 3. The only starters. Time, 62 l-ss. Second heat: P. Hanan (Auckland), 1; D. H. Symes (Canterbury), 2; N. Crump (Auckland), 3. Also started: E. B. Toas<» (Otago). Time, 57 2-ss. Final: Frankham, 1; Hanan, 2; Jarvis, 3. Won by 18in., a touch between second and third. Time, 57 l-ss. 220 Yds Ladies' Championship.—First heat: Miss M. Leydon (Auckland), 1; Miss P. Sporle (.Otago), 2; Miss N. Hughes (Canterbury), 3. Also started: Miss E. Rainey (Hawke's Bay). Time, 2m 54 2-ss. Second heat: Miss N. Basstion (Southland), 1; Miss M. Mathieson (Otago), 2; Miss N. Ludlow (Auckland), 3. The only starters, Time, 2m 59 2-ss. Final: Miss Leydon, 1; Miss Mathieson, 2; Miss Sporle, 3. Won by three yards, with seven yards betweei* second and third.
