ARCHITECTS' INSTITUTE CONFERENCE IN AUCKLAND OFFICIAL OPENING TO-DAY Nearly 100 architects from all parts of the Dominion are expected to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, which will begin at the Auckland University College to-day and end on Friday. The proceedings will he officially opened by the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, and the president of the institute, Mr. W. Gray Young, will reply. Several papers, on such subjects as town-planning, air-port design and construction, housing in New Zealand and the design of commercial buildings, will be read by members during the conference, and remits dealing witli building permits and town-planning will also be discussed. A remit from the* Auckland branch suggests that step 9 he taken to impress upon all city and borough councils the necessity of coming into lino with the Christchurch and Palmerston North City Councils and make it compulsory that plans of all building works to the value of £4OOO and over be prepared and signed by a registered architect or engineer before a permit is granted. Town-planning Board
In a remit from the Canterbury branch the opinion is expressed that the New Zealand Institute of Architects should be represented by more than one member on the Town-plan-ning Board, pointing out that, apart from the Government architect, there is only one architectural representative, and it is felt that, as architects have more in common with townplanning than perhaps some of the other professions, greater representation should be obtained. The conference will consider various reports and remits to-day and in the evening a paper on "Air-ports —Their Design and Construction" will be read by Mr. V. R. Hean, assistant-engi-neer to the Christchurch City Council. The 20th annual meeting of members of the institute will be held to-mor-row and in the afternoon papers on "Research in Building Methods and Materials" will bp read by Dr. E. Marsden, secretary of the Department of Scientific Research, and Mr. A. L. Salmond, a Dunedin architect. There will be a dinner for local and visiting members in the evening. Meeting ol Council
On Wednesdaj' there will be a meeting; of the council of the institute and papers on "Town-planning—A Basis of Efficiency in the Community," by Professor C. R. Knight; "Housing in New Zealand," by Mr. R. B. Hammond, and "New Horizons in Architecture," by Mr. E. R. Miller. Papers on "The Design of Commercial Buildings," by Mr. H. E.
