MEAT EXPORT SEASON

SMALLER SHIPMENTS MADE ONLY TWO CLASSES HIGHER CHILLED BEEF AND MUTTON Shipments from New Zealand of all classes of meat, with the exception of mutton and chilled beef, during the four months of the current export season, ended January 31, were lower than in the corresponding period in the previous season. Figures supplied by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board show that 1,548,156 carcases of lamb were exported, compared with 1,769,346 carcases last season. A total of 60,597 quarters of frozen beef, as against 94,741 quarters, was shipped, and 43,275 bags of boneless beef, against 110,463 bags. Pork shipments declined from 221,029 carcases to 181,053 carcases. The increases were in mutton, 395,027 carcases, compared with 379,189 carcases, and chilled beef, 33,853 quarters, against 11,680 quarters.

BUTTER-FAT PAYMENT KAIPARA ADVANCE INCREASED DISBURSEMENT The Kaipara Co-operative Dairy Factory Company, Limited, has deci3ed to make an advance payment of IOJd per lb. for finest quality butter-fat supplied in January. The company paid 8d per lb. in January last season. There is an increase of £B6OO in the total cheque. The output for the month showed an increase of 42 tons compared with Jan- ! uary last year. Levien, warden, the following applications were dealt with: Selwvn Aicken, for protection over four water races, three residence sites, special site and tramway licence. — Granted for a period of six months commencing December 18. The Ohinemuri Gold and Silver Mines, Limited, protection over a special site at Maratoto.—Granted for a period of six months from December IS. Annie Jane Leach, of Paeroa, a prospector's licence over 100 acres at Karangahake.—The application was granted. An application by the Golden Crown Gold Mining Company, Limited, for suspension of labour conditions over the Komata Creek special river claim was recommended for the consent of the Minister of Mines.

Jane Armour's application for sur- j render of residence site licences was adjourned until March 12. An .application by Frederick Ernest Flatt and others for a reduction in rent over the Imperial and McDonald special, quartz claims was recommended for the consent of the Minister of Mines. F. E. Flatt and others also applied for a reduction of workmen on the Imperial and McDonald claims from 32 to four men. This also was recommended, and in each case affidavits and the consent of the Ohinemuri County Council were filed. The Ohinemuri Cold and Silver Mines, Limited, lodged an application for a reduction of rent on the Silverstream Advance and Ohinemuri Extended special quartz claims. As the Ohinemuri County Council's consent had not come to hand the recommendation was held over. H. D. Bedford applied for a reduction of rent in the Golden Zone special quartz claim. The mining inspector's report, was favorrable, but the case was adjourned pending receipt of the Ohinemuri County Council's consent. REPORTS OF MANAGERS Mataki (Murchison).—Lnst week the drege worked on a fnce of 400 ft., pulling abend 3fift. in nn average depth of 15ft., entailing the lifting of a considerable amount of bottom. The bottom is now showing signs of dipping and the wash-dirt is looking better, although one part of the face contains a good deal of buried timber.
