SWIMMING AT AUCKLAND PAN-PACIFIC MEETING GRANTED [by telegraph OWN correspondent] DUNEDIN, Friday An animated discussion took place at the conference of New Zealand swimming centres to-night, when Auckland sought permission to conduct the PanPacific championship meeting during the Auckland centenary celebrations in 1940.

Referring to the application, Mr. Baxter O'Neill, of Christchurcli, secretary of the New Zealand Council, 6aid it was possible the Auckland Centre would not be permitted to conduct such a meeting. It was likely that before 1940 a body could be formed to control the Pan-Pacific championships. Auck-. land should not forget that it was not only the centenary of Auckland, but that of New Zealand and Wellington as well. Wellington had a similar proposal, but the championships would have to be conducted by the new organisation. It was quite possible that although the first meeting was arranged for Honolulu, it would bo transferred ■to Auckland or Wellington. Mr. P. Coira (Wellington) said h 6 had been personally assured by the Mayor of Wellington that the Wellington plans were well in advance of thoso of the others. The Government was to be approached for a grant toward the centenary exhibition. The Wellington Centre was willing to conduct the PanPacific championships, provided an amicable agreement with Auckland was arranged. Mr. S. Hollander (South Canterbury) moved as an amendment to the application that the matter should be deferred until Auckland and Wellington had reached an agreement. The amendment was defeated, and Auckland was graDted permission.
