200,000 VISITORS

TRAFFIC AT ROTORUA ESTIMATE FOR A YEAR [BT TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Friday Visitors to Rotorua in the course of a year number nearly 200,000, according to an estimate prepared by. the town clerk, Mr. W. McLean. In compiling the estimate Mr. McLean obtained figures showing the number of guests staying at each of the four selected hotels over the 12 months of last year. From the figures obtained the number of persons who passed through the remaining hotels in the town during the same period was computed, the estimate for each hotel being worked out in proportion to the accommodation available.The result gives a total of 44,231 for the four hotels selected, and 176,924 persons for the 29 licensed and unlicensed hotels in the town over the same 12 months' period. These figures do not take into account the number of persons passing through the various motor camps and finding accommodation in private homes. The addition of tiicse, it is considered, would bring the number of visitors to Rotorua in the course of a year to the 200,000 mark. The four hotels from which the figures were obtained were not selected because of their size or popularity, but with the object of obtaining figures which would give the most reliable average. Two of the four were licensed and the other two unlicensed. The estimated total for all hotels and boarding houses in Rotorua for each month of the year was as follows: Jaminrv, 22,732; February, 19.312; March, 17,224; April, 17.604; May, 15,760; June, 8624; July, 9220-; August, 12,156; September, 13,580; October, 12,368; November, 13,208; December, 15,136; total, 176,924.
