CHILD ABANDONED
MOTHER BEFORE COURT JUDGE GRANTS PROBATION [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION"] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday In the Supreme Court to-day Delia llabbitt, the mother of a child found abandoned in a city shop shortly before Christmas, appeared for sentence for abandoning her child of under two years and making a false statement under the Births and Deaths Registration Act. Counsel said she was a single woman, 25 years of age. She was the mother of the abandoned child and also of a girl of three years. The crime had brought tremendous shame and publicity upon the woman, who was in bad health. The whole reason for the abandonment was to get the child into a home where it would be well cared for. Mr. Justice Northcroft said counsel's remarks in extenuation were fully justified. He admitted accused to probation for one year on the abandonment charge. On the other count she was discharged.
