THE CITY MARKETS

GLUT OF VEGETABLES ■ SAMOA AND FIJI SUPPLIES HEAVY BANANA SHIPMENTS There was a glut of most vegetables aft the City Markets yesterday, with the result that only good quality supplies were in demand. Particularly large quantities of marrows, cucumbers and suedes were available. There is now a lair quantity of good celery on the market, and it is bringing better prices than usual at this time of the year. With the return of families from beaches and a period of finer. weather there is likely to be an upward trend in the market shortly. The demand for good quality apples and tomatoes was fair, but poorer grades did not sell well. Better values were received for plums and peaches. There is likely to be a glut of bananas next week. The Loch Lomond, which is due to-morrow, has 5000 cases of the Samoan variety, while between 40G0 and 5000 cases of Fijian bananas will-arrive by the Niagara 011 Monday. In spite of very heavy supplies, the demand for poultry was fair yesterday. The prices paid showed a slight falling tendency in some lines.
