LOWER STOCK KILLINGS

KAITI FREEZING WORKS RESULT OF ADVERSE WEATHER [nv TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] GISBORNE, Friday The freezing season in Gisborne so far has been a poor one. Feed conditions from the start were unfavourable as the result of the late spring and unseasonable weather during the early summer, and the wet and overcast conditions since Christmas week have retarded fattening. As a result, killings at the Kaiti Freezing Works are considerably below those for the corresponding period last year. Sheep and larnbs slaughtered so far total about 130,000 or between 30.000 and 10.000 fewer than up to the same time last year. Usually during the peak of the season nearly 7000 sheep and lambs are slaughtered in a day, but the biggest day this summer so far has been under 6000, this being attained just before Christmas. At present the daily tallies range from 1000 to 2500.

A spell of fine weather is needed to harden up the feed and to create suitable conditions in order to change what at present threatens to become one of the most disappointing freezing seasons known in Gisbornc for a long time into a busy autumn period.
