COLLECTION OF RATES
EFFECT OF LEGISLATION APPREHENSION EXPRESSED r uv TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] PALMERSTON NORTH. Thursday Difficulty in collecting rates owing to the operation of the Rural Mortgagors Final Adjustment Act has placed the Makerua Drainage Board in an embarrassing financial position. Attempts are being made to secure relief either in the form of a subsidy or by amended legislation. At a meeting of the board to-day a letter sent to the Minister of Finance. Hon. W. Nash, was tabled. It stated that the boaid had arranged for a full legal overdraft of £9959 which had relieved the position temporarily. However, with the prospect of a large sum of current rates, in addition to arrears, coining under the protection of stay orders, the board might- find itself in a verj embarrassing position. The Minister replied that he would be glad to go into the whole position at the earliest possible opportunity.
