WESTERLY DEPRESSION STRONG WINDS IN SOUTH The -weather report and forecast fo; New Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, were as follows: —A rather deep ■westerly depression is advancing across the South Tasman and affecting the southern part of the South Island. The forecast is for moderate to strong north to west winds, reaching gale force in places, and backing to south-west later in the far south. Seas rough in the Cook Strait area and rising generally south of Cape Egmont, elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong northerly winds, backing later to southerlies. Seas moderate, but increasing. The weather is likely to be unsettled in districts with a westerly aspect and some rain may be expected, later extending to parts of the eastern districts of the South Island. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST FAIR TO WARMER WEATHER The Government meteorologist issued to the Hebald last evening the following special forecast for the -Auckland Province: —Light to moderate, but increasing, westerly winds. The weather is likely to be fair and warm. Seas moderate, but rising somewhat on the West Coast. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland. —Generally fine weather, with a few light clouds, was experienced yesterdav. There was a light westerly breeze. The barometer fell during the afternoon, but commenced rising in the evening. The temperature at 4 p.m. was 72 degrees. Barometer, midnight, steady .. 29,701n, Midnight, "Wednesday . . 29,551n, Wellington.—The weather was fine and warm with a gusty, strong, northwesterly wind. The maximum temperature was 65.8 degrees. Christchurch. —The day was fine and sunny with a very light south-westerly breeze in the morning, changing to a moderate east-north-easterly in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 72.8deg. The barometer was falling steadily last night and was 29.60 in. at 9.30 p.m. Dunedin. —The day was fine and warm. The maximum temperature was 67 degrees. Conditions were cloudy for the most part, especially in the afternooa. The barometer had a falling tendency and registered 29.50 in. last night.
