LOSS OF EMPLOYMENT OTHERS FILLING PLACES IDLE SHIPS DECREASING (Received January lfi, 10.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. Jan. Ifi More tlian 1000 licences, including 350 by post, have boon issued to seamen in Sydney. There are not more than 1000 vacancies to be filled now on the 35 vessels at present idle in Australia. In the whole of Australia more than 1600 volunteers have been placed in 92 ships. FREQUENT ASSAULTS NEWCASTLE WATERFRONT A STEWARD ROBBED (■Received January 10. 9.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. Jan. 16 In view of the number of attacks recently made on volunteer workers at Newcastle the police are taking special precautions on the waterfront and a constant patrol has been ordered. It is alleged that a steward from the Abel Tasman was attacked by a number of men who flung him to the ground, kicked him and stole his discharges and bank book, in which there was shown a balance of £1.5. The steward was not a volunteer.
