"NOT BY BREAD ALONE"
MR. SAVAGE ON ART ITS CIVILISING INFLUENCE [bt telegraph OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON. Thursday Arrangements have almost been completed for the opening of the National Art Gallery and the transfer of exhibits to the Dominion Museum will commence shortly, according to an announcement made at the meeting of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum board of trustees. The Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, wa» oresent as chairman for the first time *nd the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, also attended. Mr. Savage expressed his appreciation of the work that had been already oerformed by the board in face of many difficulties and assured members of his sympathy with the scheme. He said that with their co-operation and goodwill failure to achieve the end in view would be out of the question. He and his colleagues belonged to a section of the people who were satisfied that "man did not live by bread alone." but believed that art, music and the like would do .more to sate *he race than the Police Court. The board members' minds were naturally vrapt up in the work that had been in their hearts during the past years. The attempt made by the trustees to develop culture would stand as a monument and he .could not believe that the people would be guilty of allowing the scheme to fail for want of support. . ,;/ The Minister of Internal Affairs endorsed the remarks of the Prime Minister, and said it was fitting that a national home should be' established for the bequests of the people of the country. He assured members that ha would assist the work of the board as much as he coijld.
