NAPIER CATHEDRAL
FUNDS FOR REBUILDING CAMPAIGN IN ENGLAND With the object of raising funds for the restoration of St. John's Cathedral, Napier, which was destroyed in the earthquake of 1931, Dean J. B. Brocklehurst left Napier this week on his way to England. Before his departure he said he had no programme mapped out yet, nor could he say how long he would remain in England. Regarding the prospects of raising money for a new Cathedral, he said he was unable to make much comment. The sympathy vote for the people of Napier and Hawke's Bay, he said, had died down in England. Moreover, he felt sure he would find himself in some communities where the people were feeling the effects of the bad times—people who a few years ago would have been able and willing to make donations. "But I am depending t-o a great extent upon the good name enjoyed by New Zealand in England," he added. "This has developed particularly since the war." He agreed that the 1935-36 All Black team had' helped this good name along substantially. Dean Brocklehurst will forward official reports to his headquarters in Napier from time to time. Although plans have not yet been prepared, it is considered that £50,000 will be required for the rebuilding of the Cathedral.
