FLYING HAZARDS
FOG ON EAST COAST PILOTS TAKE NO RISKS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] GISBORNE, Thursday Owing to foggy conditions over Hawke's Bay, an East Coast Airways machine, piloted by ilr. R. A. Kirkup, which left Gisborne for Napier this morning, returned to Gisborne after two hours in the air. Mr. Kirkup flew the machine over both Napier and Hastings, but the fog was exceptionally thick and he declined to risk a landing at either place. Passengers appreciated the "safety first" measures of the pilot. A Royal Air Force machine piloted by Flying-Officer A. Lester, of Auckland, with Mr. E. A. Gibson, of the Public Works Department as passenger, arrived at Gisborne from Palmerston North. An attempt "had been made to reach Tauranga, but heavy fog had been encountered and Flying-Officer Lester decided to put back to Gisborne.
