SIR CECIL LEYS

RETURN FROM ABROAD JOURNALISM IN ENGLAND (Received January 15. 10.25 p.m.) PERTH, Jan. 15 Sir Cecil Leys, of Auckland, who returned to Fremantle by the Narkunda from London to-day after a tour of America, Britain, Japan, China and India, said he could notice no great encroachment made by radio on the newspapers' province. Both had a definite function, for which they should co-operate. Sir Cecil said he had noticed a marked advance in the English newspapers, compared with five years ago. The popular press was outdoing the American newspapers in the matter of headings and display, but tended to seize upon sensational incidents, and thus was not in any sense as comprehensive as Australian and New Zealand newspapers.
