RARE BARGAIN

OFFICER IN INDIA VALUABLE STATUETTE CALCUTTA, Jan. 14 A lucky purchase was made at Benares by an officer of a Brit'sh regiment. While examining ornaments in a brass dealer's shop in the city he noticed a small statuette which appeared to be brass with glass eyes. He bought it for £l. After cleaning the statuette the officer became convinced that it was valuable and took it to an expert, who declared that it was solid gold, with eyes of rose diamonds, and was over 1000 years old.

The officer declined an offer of £10,700 for the statuette complete, but sold the diamonds for £3900. He is going to England on leave shortly and hopes to sell the statuette there. Hundreds of people are /locking to the brass dealer's shop and buying ornaments at ridiculous prices in the hope of making further lucky purchases.
