KUMARA GRUBS

COLONY FOUND IN NORTH EATING OUT CONVOLVULUS £by telegraph—own cobbespoxdent] "WHANG AREI, "Wednesday A colony of kumara grubs was dis»-' covered by a Whangarei resident when visiting Ocean Beach, Whangarei Heads. It was approximately 25 years ago that they last made their appear- 1 ance in considerable numbers. Mr. P. S. Holman, who found the grubs, states that, starting from a, protected hollow in the sandhills, the grubs have cleared a patch of convolvulus about a chain square, munching forward in a line over 100 strong. Every leaf and seed pod had been stripped by the insects.

A peculiarity of the grub is that it confines itself chiefly to plants of the convolvulus family. The grubs grow to a length of sin.; the male is of a green colour, and the female of mottled brown.

Mr. Holrnan brought some specimens to Whangarei which he has turned loose in his section of ground, which is becoming overgrown with convolvulus.
