bay of islands visit AN ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] RTJSSELL, Wednesday On his first visit to the Bay of Islands, the Governor-General, Vis» count Galway, arrived at Opua by train last evening and immediately em» barked on the Government steame* Matai. His Excellency landed at Rush sell this morning and was given an enthusiastic reception by the towns* people. Lord Galway's first act on landing was to inspect a guard of honour of Boy Scouts and Girl Guides and to shake hands with the assembled re» turned soldiers. A reception was gireij in the hall, and in reply to an address of welcome His Excellency said l;a recognised fully the great historical traditions associated with the Bay oj Islands and the beauty of the scenio attractions which the district had to offer. He hoped to pay many visits to Russell, and that, he would not be altogether without luck on the fishing grounds. At the conclusion of his address, Hi| Excellency, asked that the schoolchildren should be given an extra holiday iii honour of his visit.

During the day Lord Gahvav visited the old Russell church, the flagstaff and the rooms of the Swordfish Club. He. witnessed a native haka of welcome and was presented with a fina whale bone mere by Turei Heke. Afte? inspecting kauri trees in the near bv, bush, His Excellency visited Paihia and Waitangi, and in the afternoon he lefj by the Matai for Deepwater Cove. Lord Galway will have a day's big-game fishing to-morrow and will return to Auckland on Friday evening.
