AWARD TO AVIATOR
CAPTAIN PERCIVAL'S FLIGHT RECOGNITION OF MERIT LONDON. Nov. S The Guild of Air Pilots has decided to award its Johnston Memorial Trophy, given annually for the most meritorious feat by a British aviator, to the Australian designer-pilot, Captain E. W. Percival. On June 16, Captain Percival flew from Croydon to Oran, a distance of 2600 miles, in one day, at an average speed of 158 miles an hour, and at a total cost of less than £25.
Captain E. W. Percival, in a Percival Gull three-seater monoplane, left Gravesend at 1.30 a.m. on June 17 in an attempt, to fly to Oran and back in the same day. He reached Oran at 8.40 a.nv, having covered the distanoe of more than 1300 miles at a speed of 160 miles an hour. On the return trip he averaged 156 miles an hour, and reached Croydon at 0.30 p.m. the same day. Als Oran Captain Percival did a little shopping, and sold an aeroplane to a Frenchman. He flew all the way by compass, and was only hal£ a mile off his course when he reached his destination. The trip to Oran cost £l2.
