BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL
TRIBUTE TO FORMER MAYOR At a meeting of tho Birkenhead Borough Council last night, advice was received from tho naval officer in charge at Auckland, in reply to an inquiry from tho council, that tho Naval Board did not contemplate further acquisition at present of areas in tho Kauri Point Domain.
Tho council decided that tho request of the Northeote Returned Soldiers' Association, to sot aside portion of tho Birkenhead' Public Cemetery for soldiers' graves, could not bo entertained at present. Tributes wero paid to tho work dono for Birkenhead for many years by tho late Mr. E. G. Skeates, as a member of the Borough Council, and for four years as Mayor. On behalf of tho council and tho residents, it was decided to convey to Mrs. Skeates and tho family sincere sympathy in their bereavement, and great appreciation of the work performed by Mr. Skeates for Birkenhead.
