DISTRIBUTION OF MILK SCHOOL LIBRARY GRANT A copy of detailed instructions sent to teachers distributing milk to children in schools was forwarded by Dr. T. J. Hughes, medical officer of health,
at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board yesterday. Tho circular stated that the only satisfactory method of distribution was in bottles or sealed containers, and the use of special " straws " by the children, but he had discussed the njatter with the managers of milk companies, and there appeared to be little chanoe of having this system made universal. In the meantime it was necessary for action to be taken for the proper stirring of the milk and for the cleansing and sterilisation of utensils used. Advice that £378 would be available for school and libraries for the year ending March 31, 1936, was received from the Education Department. The secretary, Mr. D. W. Dunlop, said previously a payment of 3d a child had been made, but this had been suspended. The present grant amounted to a restoration of about half that sum. Schools had been circularised with a view to spending the money to best advantage. The department advised that the employment of other than ex-training college students in relieving work, particularly during university examinations, was approved. After hearing in committee a deputation protesting against the proposal to transfer Mr. A. B. Floyd, headmaster of the Owairaka School, through the school having risen in grade, it was decided that in justice to other teachers, the decision must bo adhered to, ana applications called for the position.
