MANUKAU HEADS RAID
ANNIVERSARY TO-DAY 1 * > To-day marks the 72nd anniversary of the raid by Maori rebels on the old signal station at Manukau Heads. In 1563 comparatively intense fighting took place ronnd Drnry, and, as all the regular troops were required to resist tho attacks of the Maoris, volunteers wore sworn in as special constables to guard tho signal station. Tho dcfenco was, however, ineffective, and a band of rebels succeeded in destroying tho station, which was not on the mainland, but on Paratutai Island, about three-quarters of a mile off the shoro. Led by To Pani, the rebels actually landed from their canoes, but they did not molest the women of tho pilothouse, Mrs. Wing, wife of the harbourmaster, and her daughter. The flagstaff and ono bout were destroyed by tho rebels and two other boats were taken away. It was reported that they later sailed for Awhitu and terrorised tho settlors there for somo time.
