PENALISING AVIATORS

Sir, —We note that Mr. O'Hara's recent flight across the Tasrnan is being acclaimed as a commendable effort on the part of an amateur. We note, also, that it is likely lie will bo officially penalised for flying an aeroplane without a certificate of airworthiness. This in itself is contradictory enough, but the aeroplane proved that it was completely airworthy in taking off with the actual load it carried and in completing the trip without giving its pilot any anxiety whatever. Without having expert knowledge concerning Air Convention regulations, we can only say that regulations which condemn a machine which is capable of passing such a severe test must be obsolete and lagging behind the rapid development of modern high performance aircraft. The restrictions recently imposed on Sir Charles Kingsford Smith appear to be another proof of this; we cannot imagine Sir Charles planning to take the air in a machine carrying an unsafe load.
