AGE OF ATHLETES
THE PEAK OF FORM VIEWS OF MEDICAL EXPERT The view that a cricketer reaches the top of his form at the age of 30 and a golfer at 31 was expressed in an address given to the British Medical Association recently. The average age of 83 batsmen who compiled over 1000 runs in the 1934 season in England was found on investigation to be 30. Bowling figures gave the same age.. Of the 40 golfers who headed the open championship list in 1934 the average age was 35. The 37 open champions since 1894 show a medium age of 31. Figures compiled from athletic records showed that the peak of form is reached in sprint events at 23, hurdles at 24, and leading up to the more strenuous field events at 30 and 31. Rowers reach their best at 26. Other investigations revealed the following figures:—Boxing, 21; wrestling, 22; football, 23; hockey, 26; tennis, 28.
