WHANGAREI TAXIS
PGOPOSED REGULATION COUNCIL DEFERS DECISION PROPRIETORS CONFERRING [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Tuesday The Whangarei Borough Council last evening held a special meeting to consider the passing of a by-law to fix minimum fares for taxis, to limit the number of licences and the maximum hours for drivers, and other matters affecting the use of taxis in Whangarei. The Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, read a letter from the taxi proprietors stating that they had met in conference. They asked that consideration of the proposed by-law should be adjourned to enable the whole matter of fares, working hours, and other organisation to be considered and an arrangement entered into by them. In moving that the request of the taxi proprietors should be adopted, Mr. A. T. Brninsby said the object of the council in framing the by-law was to' end the strife that existed in regard to price-cutting among the taxi proprietors. If the proprietors could arrive at a mutual arrangement, he considered they should have the opportunity to do so. The motion was carried.
