ILLEGAL LIQUOR SALES
COMPLAINTS BY ALLIANCE Complaints regarding after-hour and Sunday trading by hotels were reported by the secretary at a meeting of the Auckland Council of the New Zealand Alliance on Monday night. In some country districts in particular, it was stated, the illegal selling of liquor was prevalent, and dances and social evenings were spoiled by the ease with which drink was obtained after hours. Mr. C. E. 'Whitney said that on visiting country districts he found a number of hotels carried on Sunday trading, and it was a common practice for motorists to stop for drinks. It was thus easy to understand how motorists became under the influence of drink after a few stops had been made at these wayside hotels. Perhaps one of the most regrettable features was the freedom with which liquor was supplied to young people at social functions. Several complaints were referred to the police and to the Dominion executive of the alliance for investigation.. •
