INFIRMARY MANAGER

,MR. D. H. HERON APPOINTED 84 APPLICATIONS RECEIVED The appointment of Mr. D. H. Heron, of Tuakau, as manager of the Auckland Infirmary, was made at a special meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board* yesterday. Mr. Heron will succeed Mr. Henry Eastgate, who is retiring after having held the position for 13 years.

There were 84 applications for the position, which carries with it a salary of £3OO a year and a free house. The number had been reduced bv a committee to eight, and these were considered by the board yesterday. The eight applicants, who included two from Wellington, also appeared before the board in person. After considering the applicants' qualifications the board, by ballot, reduced the number to four, the final decision resulting in a large margin in favour of Mr. Heron's appointment, which was moved by the chairman, Mr. W. "Wallace, and carried unanimously. Mr. Heron, who was born in Auckland in 1893, has resided in the district all his life, with the exception of three and a-haif years, which he spent on active service-during the Great War. He was quartermaster-sergeant to the 3rd Field Ambulance, New Zealand Medical Corps, and subsequently sergeant-major in the 2nd Field Ambulance. He won the Military Medal for bravery in the field. Returning from the war in 1919 he was employed as paymaster on the staff at Portland of Wilsons (N.Z') Portland Cement, Limited. In 1922 he was made chief clerk and head storekeeper at the Portland works, and remained with the firm until 1928, when ho resigned and entered business on his own account. For the past four years he has conducted .a general store at Tuakau. Mr. Heron has taken an active part in the affairs of the Tuakau district. He is president of the Tuakau Business Men's League, a member of the executive of the Franklin branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, and a. vice-president and secretary of the Tuakau Bowling Club. LADY SUPERINTENDENT ASSISTANT APPOINTED The appointment of Miss E. S. Brown, assistant sub-matron at the Dunedin Hospital, as second assistant to the lady superintendent at the Auckland Hospital, was made at the special meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board yesterday. Miss Brown, who was trained at the Dunedin Hospital, holds general nursing and midwifery certificates, and has also undergone the post-graduate course for nurses. She her general training in 1920 and was appointed sister in 1924. She was promoted to her present post in 1933.
