URGENT MEASURES
ME. COATES' LIST HOUSING SURVEY BILL COMPANY PROMOTION LAW [BT TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORT EH 1 WELLINGTON, Tuesday An indication of the legislation in which he is personally interested and which he hopes to have passed before the session ends on Friday or Saturday was given this evening by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Coates. Apart from the second Finance Bill, which must be passed before the House of Representatives adjourns, Mr. Coates views the Housing Survey Bill as one of extreme urgency. Its general provisions were outlined in a pamphlet which the Minister issued last week, and to-day he stated that if the measure were not passed this session it would mean a delay of about six months in planning and co-ordinating municipal housing activities throughout the country. Mr. Coates also hopes to secure the passage of the Mortgage Corporation of New Zealand Amendment Bill at present on the Order Paper and a Companies Amendment Bill and a small Banking Amendment Bill yet to be introduced. Tho Minister believes that the Companies Amendment Bill will meet with the approval of all sections in tho House. It will be a fairly comprehensive measure, based largely on the final report of the commission which investigated company promotion methods in New Zealand, and it will tighten up still further the law relating to company promotion. Recent legislation has achieved a great deal in this direction, but it is considered by the Government that further legislation is necessary to close all loopholes to those who may attempt to exploit investors of capital.
