BANK OF NEW ZEALAND
ANNIVERSARY OF FOUNDING The 74th anniversary of the founding of the Bank of New Zealand, which was opened in Auckland on October 16, 1861, falls to-day. The bank was the first of New Zealand origin in the country, and the opening of the Auckland branch was followed by the establishment of an offico in Wellington the nest year. A small group of business men in Auckland established the bank. The bank was incorporated by Act of Parliament, and at first had a capital of £500,000, and disclosed assets of £555,979 in the first balance-sheet. It soon grew into a highly-important institution, and has since continued to expand, in spite of adversities toward the end of last century. The assets of the bank on March 31, 1935, were £49,440,170.
