THAMES COUNTY ROADS

CLASSIFICATION QUESTION " BREAKING OUR OWN BY-LAWS " [bt tklf.grafh—own correspondent] THAMES, Tuesday "Wo are breaking our own by-laws," said Mr. D. Courtney, speaking of traffic control within the county, at to-day's meeting of the Thames County Council. "Here we are, paying a metal contractor to carry metal two yards at a time over a class 5 road when the regulations say that the maximum is two and a-half tons, which is the weight of the lorry itself, unloaded. The whole system is wrong. There is too much difference between class 3 and class 5 roads." The chairman, Mr. H. Lowe, agreed, and suggested that either the county roads should be reclassified or else contractors should bo given time to mstal multi-axle vehicles. Mr. G. Cribb considered that most or the damage to county roads was due to the excessive speed at which heavy vehicles travelled. The chairman said the position had to bo faced between now and the end of March. If they did anything at once they would be paralysing all traffic between Thames and tho outside world. It was decided to issue special permits until March, and in the meantime to consider what should be dono regarding tho classification of county roads.
