WAIHI STRIKE
SEEKING A SETTLEMENT AUCKLAND CONFERENCE NO FINALITY REACHED DISCUSSIONS TO CONTINUE Efforts to effect a settlement of the mining strike at Waihi were advanced a further stage in Auckland yesterday, when the Hon. A. Hamilton, Minister of Labour, presided over a conference of representatives of the Martha Gold Mining Company (Waihi), Limited, Ohinemuri Mines and Batteries Union, and the branch unions involved. The Minister was occupied throughout the day on the business of the meeting.
The proceedings, which were in camera, did not lead to a result yesterday, and the discussions are to be resumed this morning. The question under consideration is whether the increased wag? rates conceded by the company should be made retrospective from May 11, the date on which the Martha company came into existence. The Minister is remaining in Auckland and the proceedings are expected to conclude to-day. No official announcement < f progress was made at the end of yesterday's discussions, but it was felt that much to assist those engaged in the negotiations bad been brought forward.
About 650 workers are involved in the strike, some 490 being employed in and about the mine at Waihi, and the remainder at Waikino.
