AUCKLAND CENTRE past season reviewed SUCCESSFUL CARNIVALS HELD A successful year's operations covering the many and varied activities of tho Auckland Swimming Centre is reviewed in the report to be presented at tho annual meeting to-morrow evening. Fourteen clubs affiliated with tho centre, and appreciation is expressed of their loyal support. Tho majority of clubs held at least one carnival each, the Parnelil Club in particular promoting its first for three years. Through specially encouraging their junior members, clubs have discovered some exceptionally promising juniors and intermediates. So fur as tho oentro's affairs wore concerned much improvement was achieved in tho method of transacting its business by tho appointment of various sub-committees. The two carnivals held for the purpose of contesting tho junior, intermediate and senior championships of Auckland were highly successful. Winners of championships were as follows:—Ladies: Mrs. W. O. Stockley, 100 yds free-style ar.d 100 yds backstroke: Miss J. Webster, 220 yds breastatroke; Miss N. Ludlow. 150 yds and 'l4oyds free-style; Miss D. Walmsley. diving- Men: 11. U. Fraukham, 50yds, lOOycls and 220 yds free-style; N. Crump, 440 yds free-style; C. R. Buchanan, 150 yds backiitroko; J. Magee. 220 yds breaststroke; W. Hassan, diving. Intermediate girls: Miss E. Rainey, 100 yds and 220 yds free-style; Miss C. Walters. 75yds breaststroke. Intermediate boys: A. Pascoe, 100 yds and 220 yds free-stylo; D. Webster, 100 yds breaststroke; J. Richardson, diving. Junior girls: Miss J. Melhose, _ 50yds and 100 yds free-style; Mis 3 G. Priestley, 50yds brenststroke. Junior boys: k. Buchanan, 100 yds and 220 yds free-style; T. Jones, 75ydn breaststroke. Excellent entries were received for tho New Zealund championships, which wore held in Auckland in February, and. were controlled with admirable efficiency. The fact that many people had to be turned away on the opening night showed that Auckland is urgently in need of up-to-date, larger, and more attractivo central baths. Tho Yaldhurat Shield was retained by the centre, the Auckland winners of titles being :—Miaii M. Leydon. 220 yds and 440 yds ladies' free-Btyle and 100 yds backstroke; Miss E. Rainey, 100 yds free-style; Miss J. "Webster, 230 yds ladies' breaststroke; \V. Hassan, men's diving. The water polo championship was won by Auckland, as also was the flying sjuadron relay. Tho annual open water race of three miles for the Annette Kellerman Cup was swum in conjunction with the championships and attracted 21 competitors, the winner being L. Yates, of Rotorua. and fastest time being returned by R. J. Webster, of Auckland. The first lady to finidh was Miss L. Grey, Auckland. The intermediate and junior championships. which took place at Timaru, resulted in the loss of the War Memorial Shield to Otago. Nevertheless, Miss E. Rainey won the 100 yds intermediate girls' free-style, IJ. Webster tho 100 yds intermediate boys breastatroke, Miss J. Melhose the 50yds and 100 yds junior girls' free-style, and Miss U. Priestley the 50yds junior girls breastsuccessful carnival was conducted on the occasion of the visit to Auckland of the French champions, Jean laris and Emile Poussard. Poussard treated spectators to the finent exhibition of diving seen in the Dominion. More swimmers took an interest in water polo, which is steadily progressing. To open tho new season the centre is combining with all clubs in holding a carnival on JSovember 19.

WAITEMATA CLUB'S SEASON A successful season was experienced by tho Waitemata Amateur Swimming and j Life-saving Club, which Promoted two carnivals a«k the Tepid Baths and thus plaved its part ip fostering local competitions, atateu the report to be presented at the annual meeting on Thursday evening. The membership stood at 19'2, an increase of 25 on the previous season s total. , In championship relay races the club s teams won a fair share of the laurels. Six victories were gained by members in tne Auckland intermediate and junior championships, as follows: —C. Watters. 7oyds intermediate girls' breaststroke: A. Pascoe. 100 yds and 220 yds mtermediate boy.sK. Buchanan, 100 yds_ and 220 yds junior boys. T. Jones. 75yds junior boys breaatstroKe. Places wert) filled at the New Zealand intermediate aid junior championship meeting in Timaru by Pascoe, Jones and Miss M. p 1 n r.k Auckland senior championships were won by Miss N. The water polo team was also successful in winning the A grade championship, losing only one match. In the New Zealund senior championships Miss Ludlow was runner-up in the 440 yds ladies free-style, and J. Mtigeo was third in the 220 yds breaatstroke. For the first time the club conducted a harbour handicap, the course being one of li miles. The winner was Miss Ludlow and fastest time was registered by Buchanan. Most development was recorded m the life-saving and surfing branch. At the New Zealand championships, decided at New Plymouth, the club won the beach belt ohampionship and was second in the march past. Competing in Auckland championships P Shanahan won the single-mon rescue title, and Buchanan won the surf race. In the marches past, the club s team was again consistent, winning the Hav/es Cup for the metropolitan championship _ and gaining second place in the provincial championship. _ It also won the Speedo Shield competition.
