ELECTROLYTIC ZINC
WEST TASMANIAN MINES EARLY RESUMPTION POSSIBLE Considerable interest has b'ecn aroused by recent suggestions that the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia. Limited, may reopen its mines on the West Coast of Tasmania. Tho latest statement of the general manager, Mr. H. St. .John Somerset, was that the company was preparing for an early resumption of work if circumstances warranted it. " Circumstances" are almost so.'ely tho condition of the markets fs>r lead and zinc, and the steady rise of prices lately suggests that if the present level of prices is maintained tho company will be * able to produce its own ore profitably.
The company has never attempted large-scale production from the Rosebery, Mount Read, and Hercules mines, which were taken over by the company late in tho war years in exchange for an issue of shares. Much work was expended on tho properties, and a complete treatment plant was_ established at Roscberv following the erection and operation of a concentrating mill at, Zeehan. The mines and the plant were ready for the commencement of largescale production by 1930, when the depression brought with it a steep fall in prices and caused the company to delay operations at the mines.
