MEN ATTACKED BY HAWKS
ANGRY BIRDS DEFEND NEST Two Southland pig huntors were in a gully containing a patch of burnt bush when thoir attention was attracted by the angry cries of a pair of sparrow hawks. Realising that they must be near the nest of the birds, tho men remainod stationary to see what happened. Thoy had not long to wait. Like a plummet one of tho birds fell straight for tho head of ono of tho huntors. "Look out," callod his companion, and just in time ho raised his viilo, causing the hawk to swerve aside, inches from his head. It was the other man's turn to dodge a second later as the female bird made its headlong dive. The hawks showed no intention of discontinuing hostilities, so rather than resort to shooting thorn the men made a dignified retreat, waving their rifles to ward off further attacks.
