WATER FOR SCHOOLS
CHARGES AT HAMILTON ELIMINATION OF WASTE [from era own correspondent! HAMILTON, Tkawday Charges for water for schools not conducted for private gain are fixed in a by-law that has been adopted by the Hamilton Borough Council. The charge for primary schools will be Is 3d per 3000 gallons, except where a certified statement of the number of scholars is produced, in which case the charge will he reduced to 3d per 1000 gallons for the number of thousand gallons equivalent to half the certified number of scholars on the normal roll. The charge for water for swimming baths will be reduced to 4d per 1000 gallons. For secondary schools the same charge will be made except that 6d per 1000 gallons will be the charge in the case of schools supplying certificates. The charge of 3d per 1000 gallons is the present net rate for primary schools. It is proposed to allow the low rate for -500 gallons per pupil per halfyear whereas it is at present unrestricted as to quantity. The secondary schools now pay Is 6d per 1000 gallons except for baths. In the course of the discussion it was stated that a great deal of unnecessary waste occurred at the schools, and it was the object of the revised charges and conditions to eliminate waste and ensure prompt payment.
