A motion of sympathy with j his relatives and appreciation of his j services to the country, moved by the j Prime Minister, Mr. Forbes, and I seconded by the Leader of the OppoI sition, Mr. M. J. Mr. Connolly collapsed in a taxi | shortly after leaving Parliament early ! last evening and died, j The Prime Minister said Mr. Coni nelly's death had come as a great shock 1 to all members of the House. Mr. Coni nolly'a health had not been of the best | daring recent months, but he had never ! been one to complain. During his short I term as a member of Parliament he | had won the respect of all his associ--1 a tea and the friendship of many of I them. Welfare of Others Mr. Connolly had been one of the I largest sheep dealers in the South Island j and throughout his dealings his sense I of fairness and consideration for others j had always been evident, continued Mr. | Forbes. He had been a quiet and con- | scientious worker for the welfare of I others and his kindness had always I been at the disposal of those in trouble. Mr. Savage described Mr. Connolly | as a friend to be depended on. As a ! private citizen and in his public j capacity Mr. Connolly had left very little to be ashamed of. His heart had always been in his work for the public welfare. Mr. Connolly had left the finest monument possible—a great number of friends who would mourn his passing. A Geserotu Opponent "Mr. Connolly was a faithful friend and a generous political opponent," said Mr. Savage. "His appreciation of the feelings and opinions of others and his desire to do the right thing made hirn a friend to ail of us, whether we held the same political views or not." Several other members also spoke and when the motion of sympathy was carried the House adjourned until 7.30 this evening as a mark of respect. The funeral of Mr, Connolly will I take place at Rakaia, Canterbury, at, | J. 0.30 to-morrow morning. It will be i preceded by a service at the Roman | Catholic Church.
