TRADE IN ENGLAND
IMPROVED CONDITIONS CHILLED BEEF PROSPECTS The impression that apart from the fact that trade conditions in some of the heavier industries, such as coal, steel and heavy textiles, were still not good. trad« generally in England is at least moderately prosperous, was gained bv Mr. A. G. Brown, general manager of tho Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company, Limited, who returned yesterday from a seven months' visit to the United States and Britain. Mr. Brown said most companies were paying dividonds and even the railway companies were enjoying a much more prosperous time than for some years. When he left, unemployment figures were lower than at any time since 1930, and exports were considerably higher than for some years. " The internal trade of England is good," Mr. Brown continued, " and this fact has largely contributed toward the recovery from the difficult conditions of the past few years. The large motor-car manufacturing firms are continually breaking output records. A busy time is being experienced by the building trades." Although nothing in the shape of a boom was ibeing experienced or was wanted, the people were quietly confident of tho fittiro. Mr. Brown spent a manth in the United States, but said ho would prefer not to comment on the conditions there beyond saying that the confidence which he had observed in England was not noticeable in the United States.
Commenting on New Zealand's prospects in the chilled beef trade, Mr. Brown said that a day or two before he left England a shipment had arrived by the Durham in excellent condition, and had a very favourable rccoption. In spite of any quota arrangements with other countries it seemed that there would bo a market for all the chilled beef New Zealand shipped to England, provided she produced the right typo.
