CITY HOUSING SCHEME
NEED FOR PUBLIC APPROVAL r CHAMBER OF COMMERCE VIEW Strong disfavour of the proposal of the Auckland City Council to embark on a further extensive housing scheme without submitting it for approval by the ratepayers—"who would have to bear the burden, in the case of loss"— was expressed by the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday. A resolution in these terms was passed, and it was decided to forward a copy to tho City Council. Mr. L. S. Piper, in disagreeing with an original motion that had been submitted for approval by tho executive, said he believed the council should bo commended on its project. The proposed scheme should not necessarily bo a paying concern but a social service. Mr. Piper referred to certain housing conditions which ho said existed in tho city at present. Mr. A. M. Seaman said that opportunity should be given to the public to say whether the scheme should go forward if there was to be a possibility of a loss.
Further discussion was taken in committee after which tho resolution outlined was approved.
