AIRPORT FOR AUCKLAND

"A CENTENARY GESTURE"

BUSINESS MEN'S SUGGESTION

A suggestion that the provision of an adequate airport with direct access to the city would be the most suitable gesture from Auckland to mark New Zealand's centenary in 1940 was approved by the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday.

The president, Mr. Gainor Jackson, said the suggestion had been made by a special sub-committee of the chamber which had considered the matter. He mentioned that the City Council had given consideration to Point England as being a suitable site. Mr. H. Turner said that even if the aerodrome were available before 1940 the suggestion was the best the chamber could offer. Auckland should aim for the best airport in Australia or New Zealand. There were numerous sites around Auckland that were suitable for both land and sea airports. A member asked if it would not hamper the present project for a land port if it were suggested for 1940. Mr. Jackson said there was no reason why tho port should not be used before that date. He considered, however, that it would take about four years to develop. Mr. Turner added that at Point England, for instance, considerable land would have to be bought and buildings and roads would have to bo constructed.
