£22,000 BEQUEST
DIOCESAN HIGH SCHOOL J| ■ IP' LATE ARCHDEACON COLE • VA CONTINGENT BENEFIT || A very I a rye contingent bequest- consisting of the whole of the testator's Now Zealand estate, valued conservatively at over £22,000, has been made to the Auckland Diocesan Girls' High School by the late Ven. %. H. Cole, formerly Archdeacon of Taranaki, who died in Auckland in September, 1934. The bequest, according to the latest issue of the Church Gazette, h subject to a life interest of the archdeacon's daughters, and to another contingency, the possibilities in regard to which cannot be ascertained for some considerable time. If this contingency does not materialise the school will ultimately ■ receive a very valuable addition to its resources.
Archdeacon Cole made no stipulation as to the use that may be made of the bequest, but expressed a wish that the school council should apply "a sum annually, whenever practicable, toward the maintenance and education of the daughters of poor clergy actively engaged in tho dioceses of Auckland and Waikato. Tho settlement made in the will dates from 1919.
Archdeacon Cole had completed 50 years in the Anglican ministry at the time of his death. Before coming to New Zealand he served in Tasmania, England, Canada and Bermuda. From 1903 until 1912, when he retired on account of ill-health, he was Archdeacon of Taranaki, and ' superintendent of home missions for the Auckland diocese, which then included the present diocese of Waikato. After a long absence abroad, he returned to Auckland some months before his death.
