THEFT OF OVERCOATS
DISAPPEARANCE AT A DANCE TWO SEAMEN CONVICTED [BY TELEGRAPH OW.V CORRESPOND EN'" ] THAMES, Thursday Two members of the crew of the S.S. Hauiti nppeared in the Police Court this morning. David James Kean, aged 21, was charged with the theft of an overcoat and a scarf valued at £2, and George Lawrence, aged 25, was also charged with the theft of an overcoat. i
The police stated that the accused attended n dance in Thames, and when leaving took the coats with them. The owners communicated with the police who went to tho wharf, but the Hauiti had sailed. On arrival at Auckland the men admitted the thefts.
Mr. 0. J. Garland, for the accused, said Kean had no reason to take a coat, but someone had taken Lawrence's, and he took one to replace it. Each accused was fined 40s.
