QUALITY OF PRODUCE

IMPORTANCE STRESSED VALUE OF THE INDUSTRY GRADING POINTS AWARDS "From now on the keynote of all New Zealand farm production must be quality," said Mr. H. E. Worsp, chairman of directors of the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company, Limited, yesterday, in addressing tlie annual spring conference of the New Zealand Dairy Factory Managers' Association. "You as managers must do all you can to maintain a reputation that I know you have very much at heart," he said. "You are responsible for the position of the dairy industry, with a duty of upholding the good name of the Auckland Province and of the farmer." The dairy farmer was by far the largest exporter of the province, Mr. Worsp stated, and had been, to n great extent, responsible for the rapid growth of Auckland City. If the totals of dairy produce, boneless beef, and veal and hides and skins, were added there could be gained some idea of the part played by the dairy farmer in the progress of the country. He was certainly doing his part, with his topdressing, the care of his stock, tho maintenance of clean shed conditions, to say nothing of his hard work, and in almost every case was striving to produce a first-class raw material.

"The efforts of the farmer have throughout been energetically backed up by the factory managers," said Mr. Worsp. "That they know their job has been amply demonstrated by the reputation that our produce enjoys overseas, where it is competing successfully with that of other dairying countries." Referring to the relations between tho primary producer and the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company, Mr. Worsp pointed out that the company was controlled and owned by the farmers themselves. It was still fulfilling its original function of catering for all branches of tho industry and had neglected no section requiring cold storage.

Prizes for tho highest grading points for produce exported from the port of Auckland during the year ended July 31, 1935, were awarded as follows: Butter: Kaitaia Dairy Company (Mr. T. R: McCarthy), 94.161 points, 1; Ruawai Dairy Company (Mr. E. K. Hames), 94.154 points, 2; Northern Wairoa Dairy Company, Kirikopuni branch ' (Mr. J. Booth), 93.909 points, 3. Cheese: Cambridge Dairy Company, Hautapu branch (Mr. T. Burr), 92.739 points, 1; Toa Toa Dairy Company, 92.627 points, 2.
