WATERFRONT FIRE
OUTBREAK ON PILE-DRIVER
A fire broke out 20 minutes after midnight on the Auckland Harbour Board's pile-driver moored against the Eastern wing of the Northcote Wharf. The fii e was noticed by three men after their arrival by the ferry steamer which left Auckland at midnight. The flames were then leaping 12ft. above the deck near the winch-housing.
The Northcote Fire Brigade was promptly notified and arrived within a few minutes. The three men had, however, extinguished the outbreak with buckets of water. It was found that comparatively slight damage had been done to the deck of the pile-driver. McCallum, of Tainarata, at a dance at Wellsford last night, their five-roomed home was completely destroyed by fire. Their only child had been left with a neighbour.
