RUNNING DESCRIBED

MIDIAN SCORES AGAIN

TWO AUCKLAND WINNERS

SILVER BRIER, GRAND SCORE BY ARCHER Iho public summed up the prospects very accurately in the Debutante Stakes when tho favourites Moquetto, with \\hoin Luyish was bracketed, and Galho finished lirst\ and second. Aloquette and Mohua gave some trouble at the post and when tho tapes were released Mohua and Waiongona Hero badly away. Lavish was smartest away, but was soon heatled by Moquette and Gallic, the trio drawing clear of the others, who were headed at the top bv Mohua and Seeadlcr. Moquetto i i,! 11 ' 0 straight, just in front of Uallio, with Lavish a couple of lengths back, and then a gap to Mohua, The Irarnp and Essex. Moquette ran on wo to sooro easily by a length from , . .0, wi.th Lavish four lengths away third. Mohua was a moderate fourth, followed by Essex, Mirth, Karl and Black Fox. Moquetto is a well-grown filly, and appears tc have inherited a good deal or the brilliancy of her dam Motley, who was a lino two-year-old. She displayed great speed and always had the measure of Gallic, although the latter hung on j i tho gamest possible fashion right to the end. Tho first and second outelassec. the others anil canto right >r V? i' V " showed some pace and Mohua shaped creditably considering that sho did not get away well. iEsteem Beats Soloist

Lhe first clay's result was reversed when Esteem narrowly dc tea ted Soloist in the Gonville Huck Hurdles, the latter beir.g slightly tho better favourite. Lady \Vessex baulked at the first ience and Bay Sand had a turn in the lead. Soloist and Ruaform ran to tho front turning along the back and Esteem moved up third. Soloist jumped away slightly at tho second to last fence, bub at tho last obstacle was closely attended by Esteem, Ruaform and Petrarch. Esteem finished best to win by a head from Soloist, who deieated Petrarch by three lengths. Ruaform was fourth, succeeded by Spender, Kaola and Bay Sand, who were well beaten. Esteem was patiently ridden by W. H. Bowden and finished just too strongly for Soloist, who did not jump tho'last feuco too well. Oratory was a strong favourite for the Trial Handicap and justified the confidence reposed in her by winning easily. Going Gay, Oratory, Red Sand and Supreme Court were the first to become prominent, Oratory and Supreme Court being in front crossing the top from II Duce. Arouse, Mesurina and Going Gay. There was little change as tho field swept into tho straight, where Orfttorv drew away to win by three lengths from Supreme Court, who defeated II Duce by two lengths. Lady Eka was fourth, followed by Going Gay, Flit Acre and Tho Image". Oratory is a very shapely filfy who gallops well. She has had only two starts arid has. won both. Supreme Court had every chance, but Oratory was too good for him. II Duce made a good showing and should be all the bctltir for his racing at the meeting. Flit Acre and Callisto did not begin well and were never dangerous. Defeat of Haut Monde

The odds-on favourite Haut Monde was not favoured with the best of luck in the Wanganui Guineas, and had to lower his colours to tho consistent and improving Alchemic, who scored his third successive victory. LoAvenberg and Hororata 'were first to show out from a fine start,/ but Bun -Fight was in charge going out of the straight. Hunting Scene ran to the front along tho back irora-Buii; Fight, Hororata, Alchemic and Entail, Haut Monde going back to last after being badly checked at tho five and . a-half. Hunting Scene, Hororata and Severe were in front from Alchemiii at the top, where Haut Monde was running up fast on the outside and Lowenberg was making a forward move on the rails. Alchemic led into the straight from Sovero, with Hororata and Haut Monde next. Alchemic stayed on solidly under pressure to win bv a length from Haut Monde, with Lowenberg two lengths away third. Hororata was fourth, succeeded by Bun Fight, Happy Landing and Entail. The winner, whose rider lost an iron three furlongs from home, was responsible for a sound performance and is a good: colt. However, Haut Monde waii unlucky. He became awkwardly placed on the rails early and was left with a vei.-y difficult task when squeezed to the rear along the back. He made a game effort over tho last few furlongs. Me and Lowenberg, who was also checked during the running, should do better on larger courses. An Exciting Finish

The favourite Royal Banquet struck trouble early and missed a place 'in the Higgio Handicap, in which thero wan a very exciting finish. Carfex and Rust led early, but Ruri was in command going out of the straight and ho held the lead right round to the run homo, ait which stage he and Fersen were closely pursued b.v Midian, with Carfex and Rust next. Midian finished utrongly on the outside to win by a head from Fersen, with Carfex another head away third. Ruri wan fourth succeeded by Rust, Sanguine King and Royal "Banquet. The winner recorded another good performance and Fersen indicated that ho may not be long in winning. The three-year-old Bantry was favourite for the Moutoa Hack Handicap, but the best he could do was to finish third. Bantrv ran to the front early and along the back was joined by Hunting Cat, the pair leading from Evasion, Blue Tiger, All Spirit and Silver Brier. Hunting Cat dropped back slig;htly at the top, where Blue Tiger ran up to Bantry and Silver Brier and Sporting Song moved up on the outside. Bantry was first into the straight from Sporting Song and Silver Brier, with All Spirit next. Silver Brier finished strongly and stored by a length from Sporting Song, who beat Bantry by half a length. Cloudy Bay was fourth, followed by Bumble, Hunting Cat and Tahuran'gi. Silver Brier displayed! improvement upon her first day's running and was going away at fcho finish The Sprint Contest Outsider of tho field of seven, Spiral brought off a surprise in the Owen Handicap, paying double-figures. Slippery shoy.*ed out first, but Galilee was soon in front and led into tho straight from Slippery, Refresher, Spiral, Curie and Gold . .Mission, who wore in close order. Spiral finished strongly on the outside and got up to win by a head from Galilee, who was half a length in front of Refresher. Curio was almost in linn fourth, followed by Slip-

pery, Gold Mission and Limulus. who was cut back last near the half-mile. Spiral has done most of his racing over .middle distances and lie displayed unsuspected sprinting abilitv. The, three-year-old Lady Ruler was favourite! for tho Spring Hack Handicap, but sho failed to gain a place, victory going to another well-supported Auckland'Sr, Grand Score. Windsoreen wan badly left and Lady Ruler jumped out, eleaiilv from No. 1 to be in command early from Grand Score, Gold Gleam arid Celerrimus. Grand Score headed Lady Ruler rounding the hoipe turn, where Gold Gleam and Celerriirtus were nisi? handy. Grand Score finished on solidly to score by a length from Gold Gleam, who defeated Celerrimus by a length and a-half. Thane ran on solidly at the end to get fourth ahead of Landlubber, Tail Lictht, Lady Ruler and Mustang. Lady Ruler had every chance, but she was beaten at the homo turn. Grand Score ran his usual honest race and won well.
