Five second favourites and two first favourites were successful at the conclusion of the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday, and the only surprise was the victory of Spiral, who returned ;th» best price of the meeting v'hen he Wo l the Owen Handicap, paying double figures. Hitherto Spiral has been regarded as purely a middledistance horse and his success among the sprinters over six furlongs was generally unexpected and lie was tho outsider of :hc field of seven. The Wanganui Guineas was won by 'Alchemic, who defeated the favourite Haut Monde. Alchemic registered a sound performance, and tho second horse, Haut Monde, made a fino showing considering that lie had anything but a good run. The Debutante Stakes, the first two-year-old race of the season, was decisively won by Moquette, a

speedy daughter of Limond and Motlev, with the Te Awamutn-trained colt Gallic second. Tho principal handicap, the Higgio Handicap, provided an exciting finish and was narrowly won by Midian, ii'lio thus completed a double at the meeting. The conditions for racing -were good, tho weather being fino and much warmer than on the first day and there was a fair attendance. Tho totalisator handled £12J09, compared with £11,015 on the second day last year. Investments for tho meeting totalled £19,152 30s, against £18,611 10s, an increase of £sll 10s. ilesults:
